Essential job functions:

  • Responsible for the safety & training of all on-site employees

o Maintain & keep posted/readily available to all staff: phone list for emergency use
o Immediately update all employees about any changes in Standard Operating Procedure
o Administer on-the-job training and ensure training paperwork is organized and available to all employees o Promote a safety-conscience environment
o Ensure weekly safety toolbox meetings take place and paperwork is turned into office
o Review all daily checklists for all shifts before they are turned into the office by HR & Safety Administrator
o Ensure Health & Safety plan is followed & Esafety is completed

  • Exercise proper authority in hiring, promoting, reprimanding, and terminating according to the law
    o Respond immediately to unusual/inappropriate behavior & report to HR if/when necessary
  • Take appropriate corrective action as necessary up to and including termination
  • Ensure each employee's individual performance is formally reviewed at least annually

o Recommend raise if applicable

  •  Schedule for all shifts (accounting for holidays & time off) to ensure adequate coverage

  •  Responsible for safe sorting, baling, weighing & loading of materials such as cardboard, plastic & bladders

o Maintain appropriate staffing and equipment to meet customer/exceed expectations
o 100% landfill avoidance'no recyclables placed in trash
o Ensure all trailers & vendors are loaded to proper specifications & weights
o Ensure proper training & use of TILS/interfacing with office logistics according to standard procedures
o Responsible for proper training on & identification of materials

  • notify EHS when identification cannot be made
  • ensure proper disposal and paperwork (manifest if needed) is filled out and given to EHS/office 

o Manage sludge box and cleanliness of materials placed in sludge box
o Manage oil pickups for the main tank and cement house
o Coordinate timely transportation of trash/wastes/recyclables from containers throughout the plant to appropriate staging and storage areas
o Sort materials as quick as safely possible into the appropriate container such as trailers, compactors, roll-off beds, area or etc.
o Manage & load vendor and external storage trailers
o Grind and crush fluorescent lamps
o Ensure adherence to ISO14001 and HWI work instruction from customer which includes the bulb crusher o Communicate with the office when you need a load moved/a load has not moved as promised
o Put all info in TILS including all materials on storage trailers and keep it updated DAILY
o Attend customer meetings as needed and follow up on any issues
o Send Wednesday list to Research (NB/JK/PB)
o Fill out bills of lading and send weekly packet to office every Friday
o Effectively & efficiently respond to calls from truck drivers
o Follow proper procedures for samples (UPS) and photos
o Ensure pallets in receiving are banded daily and stored on trailer
o Ensure teamwork; that everyone is doing their share of the workload and that materials keep moving
o Notify HWI office if/when customer makes requests out of usual scope of program 

  • Maintain customer-service focus, especially when handling calls from customer's management

o As the point of contact for all staff, you are acting as a representative of HWI and should maintain a professional and courteous tone. It will also be important to be as responsive as possible.

  •  Create daily checklists of what needs to be done for each shift

  •  Foster an open-door policy for all shifts. Stop by periodically during alternate shifts.

  •  Maintain goal of continuous improvement operationally (teamwork), financially and environmentally

o Take initiative & make decisions to resolve potential issues, seeking approval first when necessary

  •  Ensure areas are in 5S audit-ready condition daily including HWI office & area of the plant, scrap tire cage, cage for bladders/green tires, etc., back pad and anywhere around these areas

  •  Responsible for ensuring Health & Safety plan is followed

  •  Responsible for fork truck training & licensing

  •  Complete proper procedures for reporting, investigation, drug screen, employee medical treatment, documentation, retraining & follow-up for any accident/incident

  •  Respond to requests within HWI in a timely manner

  •  Foster a trusting and loyal relationship with the management team while maintaining proper confidentiality

  •  Any other tasks as needed/assigned

    Knowledge, skills, and abilities required:

  •  Ability to work 45+ hours/week and any day/shift to ensure customer & employee needs are met.

  •  Basic knowledge of legal practices with regard to staffing, promotions, reprimands and terminations

  •  Knowledge of 5S standards; ability to effectively prioritize and maintain organization

  •  Ability to communicate effectively in English

  •  Ability to effectively train adults on proper sorting methods & associated equipment used

  •  Intermediate knowledge of legal & Standard Operating Procedures for coordinating all recyclables

  •  Leadership skills needed to unite employees & provide best customer service

  •  Possesses & fosters creativity toward continuous process improvement

  •  Knowledge of standard safety practices & skills/abilities needed to teach/promote them

  •  Intermediate ability to use MS Office software, smart phones, and internet

  •  Ability to safely drive a forklift and train others to obtain licensure

    Physical requirements:

  •  Must be 18 years of age or older

  •  Able to lift at least 70 lbs

  •  Ability to stand, sit, lay, reach, bend, lift, push, pull, drive, and maintain focus for sustained periods of time

  •  Ability to safely & effectively work in an environment which may be exposed to extreme heat and cold
